"There are always those who do not forgive the world its errors, who can continually see through its polished veneer to the rot that inevitably lies underneath. This is both a blessing and a curse, for though they are able to pierce the veil to a truth, they have themselves already become too tainted to act upon it. Darkness becomes tolerated, though never accepted, and the struggle is no longer the search for happiness or self-actualization, but to prevent the external decay from penetrating within."
Description:
"I've known Eric since he moved to Gallows, and I never understood why everyone always seem to have a bad impression of him. It's like he's got some kind of negative aura - I remember when I introduced him to one of my aunts. She was pleasant, but I could see she was wondering why I was hanging out with a kid like him, like he was going to convince me to go jump off a bridge with him or something. Come to think of it, we did both break our legs climbing trees the next day...and there was that time all four of us almost drowned jumping off that log...but that's not the point! Umm...what was I going to say? Oh yeah! Eric's just never gotten a fair trial, that's all. He never had all the chances he should have."
- Godefrey Rex
"He is one difficult guy to get along with. Eric's arrogant, rude, antisocial, pretty much a giant smart-ass most of the time...oh, and he smokes too much. He's 'trouble.' The kind that parents always warn their kids to stay away from. If you don't know him, that is, and that's pretty much everyone in this town. I remember that time, though, that Mrs. Jenkins down the road went into labor during a blizzard. Eric actually stole a snow plow to get her to the hospital...and he didn't even like her very much. His method of execution can be pretty questionable sometimes, but you can never question his morals."
- Judah Richards
"Eric always acts so tough, always acts like he doesn't care about anything or anyone. It's sad, really, how much he seals himself away, trying to avoid getting hurt. If you know him, though, like we do, then you'd see how much he really cares about everything, and how much he suffers when people turn away from him, judge him, without even knowing who he really is. I'm worried that it's starting to poison him, that one day, maybe he really won't care anymore...and that the world would never know its loss."
- Eleanor Reinard
"He's always been a bad apple. I mean, what could you expect from a family like his? A deadbeat father and a whore of a mother who's probably slept with more men that I'd care to count. I'm surprised there isn't a whole slew of them, the way she throws herself around. I would never let my children even speak with him. I mean...would you believe he actually stole a snowplow when Margaret Jenkins needed to get to the hospital, rather than just driving back with a doctor like any decent boy would have done? Bad roots, I tell you. Bad roots."
- Jane Radcliffe, three streets down the road.
